How does the Celtic Masterclass work?
Will my access ever expire?
No, you purchase an individual password that will never expire. This Masterclass is available for buyers to view for an unlimited period. That means as much as you like, whenever you like, with no expiry date! I believe it is important that you will have unrestricted access over time. Having said this, technology may catch up with the programming at some future stage, or other unforeseen reasons could lead to eventual termination. Nonetheless, my first Masterclass is still online for users 8 years after its launch. Some have told me they benefited from redoing the entire course again years later; they found they could appreciate aspects that went over their heads at first. So this is an investment for the longer term.
Who is the instructor?
Denis Brown is the instructor. Irish by birth and residence, Denis is internationally reputed as a leading figure in Western calligraphy. His full-time education in calligraphy was followed by continual development of 32 years, to date. A master of the broad pen in both traditional and in uniquely individual experimental styles, his media includes calfskin vellum, paper, glass and film. His works have a unique beauty that is more than skin deep. Denis has taught at the invitation of calligraphy guilds internationally since he was 20 years old and is known for his clarity of explanation in teaching. Also aged 20, he was elected as the youngest Fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators, while working on The Great Book of Ireland from his home studio in Dublin. He has rare tech prowess for a craftsman so his films are fully professional, as well as artistically presented.
Will one to one tuition be provided?
Not as standard but it may be possible as an add-on option. If there is demand, students might contact the instructor to arrange emailing images of their work before receiving an appraisal via live online video chat. This will involve an extra charge per half hour appraisal but will be entirely optional.
Is the site fully secure?
Absolutely; as seen in the https:// attribute in the URL. All payments are securely handlded securely through PayPal and/or Stripe.
What supplies will I need?
You will need broad pen nibs and a pen-holder with a round barrel. The specifically recommended brand of nibs is Brause Bandzug. You will also need a paintbrush for loading the nib, suitable ink or gouache and practice paper. These are the main things, nothing too expensive. A video is included in the Masterclass detailing these and other tools and materials, and specifying online suppliers in EU, USA and UK: “The Writing Setup; Tools & Techniques”.

There is information even beginners can learn from but there are also very advanced techniques that require skills developed over the years. The target viewers are calligraphers of some experience up to the most advanced. Those of lesser experience can let advanced options float over their heads as they chose the simpler options suggested, knowing that, in future, there will be more to come back to. Potentially, this product could keep you developing for many years.
How do I purchase the Celtic Masterclass?
Use the “Enroll in Course” button on this secure page to take you to the sales page. After secure checkout (processed by Stripe or PayPal), you will be prompted for your credit card information. Next, you will be asked to create an account using your email address and a password (your browser can save this so you can log in easily later). The processing is automated and instant; it does not require me to be awake and looking at my emails (as I still have to be, to manually program passwords for my earlier Masterclass!) After you check out, you can enter the Masterclass immediately! Bookmark the course page so you can revisit it easily.
Can I watch the program offline?
The Masterclass is an online course. Downloading the videos is not recommended/facilitated as the curriculum sequence would be lost.
What about copyright restrictions?
Purchase provides an individual license for private viewing on any or all of the individual’s devices. Password sharing is prohibited. Use in teaching is not permitted except where every student has purchased a license. Public presentation of any kind is not permitted without the express permission of the author.
What are the system requirements?
You will need any reasonably up-to-date computer/tablet/phone that can run a web browser, and fast internet access. If you are satisfied with how the samples play on your device, you should have no problems with paid-for content, as the format is identical. You also need built-in or external speakers, or a set of headphones, for audio output. You will need a printer or a copying service to print out guide sheets at US letter size or A4.

Are movies in High Definition?
The movies are available at 1080p full HD but might be automatically scaled down if your internet speed is an issue. The first moments of playback tend to be lower definition as the video loads before HD kicks in. If you prefer, you can manually select the best definition, however, some buffering (intermittent stop/starting) may be experienced.
What devices are supported?
Any computer/tablet/phone that can run an up-to-date web browser, and can access fast internet.
Playback stutters/stalls–what can I do?
Online HD video requires high-speed internet. If playback stalls a lot, try selecting a lower definition from the small “cogwheel” icon at bottom-right of the video. Pausing the movie and leaving the window open for a while may allow time for the video to buffer. To resume playback, drag the playback position bar back a little and click the play button. Try to ensure other activities/users on your network are not taking up bandwidth while you are watching, e.g. downloading files or watching other movies.
I forgot my password!
When you Sign In, enter the email address you used when you purchased the class, then select the Reset Password option. You will be emailed instructions.
When I log in, it says my password is invalid?
This is a known issue for Safari users. If you let Safari automatically generate a password when you create your account, Safari does not communicate this password to our system. So when you log in, your password will appear as invalid. If this happens, click the Reset Password option, follow the instructions in the email you receive, but this time click the “don’t add” button in Safari and type a new password manually. Allow Safari to Update your password in Keychain.
