About Italic Rhythm to Polyrhythmic Calligraphy
The new Celtic Masterclass is the product of a year and a half’s dedicated work, not to mention a lifetime’s experience to date!
Celtic scripts were among the first to fascinate me in my early teens. Later as a full-time calligraphy student, I selected them for disciplined analysis and contemporary adaptation. Since then I have further adapted and refined them.
The Celtic Masterclass teaches three scripts: an adapted Celtic half-uncial, a “Celtic Hybrid” script (that is a blend of Celtic and more rhythmic italic forms), and a set of Hybrid capitals. These will initially be models for copying but ultimately may show creative students a means to adapt any historical script to contemporary or personal requirements.

Exciting documentary-style films present history, not only of Celtic Script (although that is included in revealing detail) but of Insular art in general and even prehistoric Irish art that preceded the Celts’ arrival in Ireland by millennia. The website is a new fully secure platform hosted by partner sites, Vimeo and New Zenler. Videos are available in full HD 1080p but can automatically scale down when the internet speed is less than optimal. Normally, they can be watched full-screen in full HD without issues.

The site is optimised for all devices from large computer screens or projectors to tablets, to smartphones. Even on a phone, you’ll see letters demonstrated about life-size and from the writer's viewpoint, far closer than students get to see in actual classes with me. On a large screen and with good external speakers or headphones, the experience is at times cinematic.

About your Instructor
Denis Brown is the instructor of both courses. Irish by birth and residence, Denis is internationally reputed as a leading figure in Western calligraphy. His full-time education in calligraphy was followed by continual development of 32 years, to date. A master of the broad pen in both traditional and in uniquely individual experimental styles, his media includes calfskin vellum, paper, glass and film. His works have a unique beauty that is more than skin deep. Denis has taught at the invitation of calligraphy guilds internationally since he was 20 years old and is known for his clarity of explanation in teaching. Also aged 20, he was elected as the youngest Fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators, while working on The Great Book of Ireland from his home studio in Dublin. He has rare tech prowess for a craftsman so his films are fully professional, as well as artistically presented.
